Top 5 Anchorages in Mallorca for Swimming (And How to Stay Jellyfish-Free)

Mallorca is one of the premier sailing destinations in the Mediterranean, and for good reason. Its coastline combines dramatic limestone cliffs, turquoise coves, and remarkably clear water. But every summer, from June through September, jellyfish — particularly the painful Pelagia noctiluca — move inshore with the warm water. Here are five of the best anchorages on the island for swimming, along with practical advice on staying jellyfish-free.

1. Cala Formentor

Located at the northern tip of the island, Cala Formentor is one of Mallorca's most iconic beaches. The water is calm, exceptionally clear, and deep enough for larger vessels to anchor comfortably in the outer bay. The surrounding pine forest and cliffs make it a visually stunning spot. Jellyfish presence is variable — in calm, windless conditions, concentrations of Pelagia noctiluca can be significant. An anti-jellyfish pool deployed from the stern lets you enjoy the water regardless of conditions.

2. Cala Pi

A narrow, sheltered inlet on the southern coast, Cala Pi is a favourite among sailors for its protection from the prevailing summer winds and its photogenic stone watchtower. The anchorage is tight — space for perhaps six to eight boats — so arrive early in high season. The enclosed geography means water circulation is low, which can concentrate jellyfish during blooms. That same enclosure makes it ideal for a stern-deployed inflatable jellyfish pool: the water is calm, with virtually no current.

3. Sa Dragonera (Cala Lladó)

The small island of Sa Dragonera off the western tip of Mallorca is a protected nature reserve and one of the least crowded anchorages on the island. Cala Lladó on its eastern side provides excellent shelter and outstanding snorkelling. Wind and current here can vary in the afternoon — a good reason to pair your jellyfish pool with an additional ballast set to keep it anchored securely.

4. Cala Mondragó

Part of a protected natural park on the southeastern coast, Cala Mondragó consists of two adjacent coves — S'Amarador and Cala Mondragó itself. Both are shallow, sandy-bottomed, and stunning. The anchorage is popular with families, making it a perfect spot for a pool and inflatable platform set — giving children a safe, jellyfish-free swimming area while adults relax on the floating platform.

5. Cabrera Island

Technically a separate island and national park, Cabrera is accessible from Mallorca by day permit and is arguably the most pristine anchorage in the entire Balearic archipelago. The water clarity is exceptional and marine life is abundant. Permits are limited and must be arranged in advance, but the experience is worth it. The completely sheltered natural harbour is ideal for deploying a larger anti-jellyfish pool for groups.

A Note on Jellyfish in Mallorca

The jellyfish season in the Balearics typically runs from June to September, with peak density in July and August during sustained high pressure and calm seas. Blooms are difficult to predict and can appear overnight at anchorages that were clear the day before. The only guaranteed protection is a physical barrier — an inflatable anti-jellyfish pool that seals your swimming area completely, regardless of what is in the surrounding water.

Whether you anchor at Formentor, Mondragó, or Cabrera, the right pool means jellyfish are never a reason to stay out of the water. Browse our full range of anti-jellyfish pools and accessories and get ready for the season.
